The debate on healthy eating continues to rage on. We took this opportunity to review our Heart Mark food endorsement programme which incidentally continues to enjoy approval by the Department of Health, to ensure our criteria is aligned with the strongest and current scientific evidence to guide healthy eating. Healthy eating in schools is also important to us, so we continued to grow our Tuck Shop programme to reach more children.
The HSFSA continues to work with national and provincial health ministries to prioritise NCDs and CVD in health plans and for enabling policies. These include advocacy through the SA NCD Alliance, influencing national policy on chicken brining levels, and partnerships with provincial health departments in the Western Cape (WOW programme), KZN and Gauteng in their health and wellness initiatives.
Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and strokes, is the second biggest killer in South Africa, after HIV/AIDS. While it is a growing problem, about 80% of cardiovascular disease can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle. We encourage everyone to know their risk and get tested regularly.
