Sufferers of cardiovascular events can feel isolated and nervous when confronted with lots of new information about their condition. They may feel the need for support to learn more about how to care for their health, and to hear from others who may have gone through the same experience.
We run a monthly support group meeting called Mended Hearts which helps those that have been affected by cardiovascular disease. The groups take place in three locations around the country – Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
The Mended Hearts Support Group was established in Cape Town in 2006, in partnership with Life Healthcare, with the goal of providing a meeting place for people who have experienced a cardiovascular event, as well as their supporting family members and friends, and members of the public who are interested in learning more about heart disease and stroke. The monthly group aims to give educational support and advice to survivors, to prevent a second event from occurring.
To be added to our mailing list, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, and let us know which Mended Hearts group you would like to join.
Additionally, you could also join Melohearts in Cape Town. Melomed Private Hospitals based in the Western Cape established the Melohearts Programme in support of those who had suffered a cardiovascular event.
The free monthly programme is held at their various hospitals and provides educational talks, cooking demonstrations and advice on leading a healthier lifestyle. Melomed has over the years become increasingly aware of the high rate of cardiovascular incidents in the communities in which it serves and has recently extended the support groups to the general public as well.
